 Volvo Cars (Volvo Personvagnar) is a luxury automobile maker founded in Sweden in 1927. The company was originally a subsidiary of SKF, a maker of ball bearings. “Volvo” in Swedish means “I roll” or in modern language “I drive” and was considered a good name for a car. In 1935 Volvo AB took control and in 1970 acquired the Dutch DAF to market a small car on their platforms being the Volvo 340. In 1999 the Ford Motor Company purchased Volvo Cars and added it to its Premier Automotive Group, although Volvo Sedans and estate/wagons are still manufactured in Sweden.

“Cars are driven by people” therefore they must be safe, which was the major principle for Volvo Cars. From their first vehicle the Volvo OV 4 in 1927, safety has been a feature ever since. Such features as laminated glass in 1944, the 3-point safety belt, in 1956 the first to provide padded dashboard, first rear-facing child seat, followed by child safety cushions and a side impact safety system and side airbags. Up until 2007 over 80 new individual safety inventions were introduced in Volvo cars, the last then being the LDW or Lane departing Warning System. Most of Volvo’s safety technology have now been absorbed into all Ford passenger vehicles.
