Suzuki Loom Company began in 1909 building looms for Japan’s silk industry. In 1937 the company also produced a liquid-cooled four stroke, four cylinder engine which was then fitted to a small passenger car. During the Second World War the manufacturer of cars was stopped. After the war, the Americans assisted Suzuki into manufacturing looms for their cotton industry. Unfortunately, in 1951 the cotton market collapsed as did the sale of looms.

The Suzuki company to remain in business returned to building vehicles and became the Suzuki Motor Company. Their first was a motorized bicycle named Power Free which was followed by a motorcycle, the tiny 60cc Diamond Free bike. This led to a boom in production and with succeeding models Suzuki were selling over 6000 units a month by 1954. In 1955 Suzuki returned to manufacturing automobiles and launched the first of many innovated technically superior cars, the Suzulight. Due to a lack of finance, the company had to enter in market sharing arrangement with several other automotive builders since 1985. They include Mazda, Honda and General Motors with such brands as Holden Barina in Australia, Chevrolet Swift in the USA, Pontiac Sun Runner manufactured in Canada and the Vauxhall Agila in the UK. Several distinctively named Suzuki models however, are the Suzuki Vitara and the Suzuki Jimny.
