Rover

Rover originated in Coventry, UK in 1904 as a manufacturer of cars with the two seater Rover Eight. Actually, the first Rover was a tricycle in 1883, the Rover Safety Bicycle which was the first rear-wheel drive, chain driven cycle with two same sized wheels. In the 1880s high-wheeled penny farthings were fairly dangerous to ride. The word for “bicycle” in Polish is “rower”, when anglicised becomes “rover”. As well as automobiles during World War 1 the company made motor cycles and lorries for the military. After the War, more bicycles and motor cycles were manufactured than cars, namely those to a Sunbeam design rather than Rover. Meteor tank engines became the company’s major focus as the Second World War became a priority for most industries in 1940.
