Proton

Proton is Malaysia’s national automobile manufacturer founded in 1983. Their first model in 1985, the Proton Saga was based on parts supplied by Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors. By 1989 100,000 models had been sold. A new model, the Proton Wira in 1993 though based on the Mitsubishi Lancer/Colt now contained local parts as did the Proton Perdana (Based on a Mitsubishi Galant) in 1995.

With the company’s acquisition of Lotus in 1996 they gained engineering and automotive expertise and produced their first totally designed car in 2001, the Waja. However, by 2002 from a local market share of 60% a reduction in import tax to only 5% in Malaysia, their share dropped to 30% by 2005. Yet they still managed to build over 3 million vehicles between 1985 and August 2008, many of whom have been sold throughout the Pacific region. The present plan to produce a fuel efficient hybrid vehicle together with new models such as the Proton Saga should see the company continuing with some success.
