Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Motors was formed in 1970 a division of Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, as a manufacturer of automobiles and light trucks. A company which had it’s origins in 1917 when Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., built Japan’s first production car, the Model A. Mitsubishi has always acquired partnerships with overseas firms such as Chrysler, Daimler or building Hyundai and Proton cars under licence. The company co-owned the largest automobile manufacturing plant in the Netherlands with Volvo during the 90s until taking full ownership in 2001. During that time Mitsubishi increased its production from 250,000 units per year to 1.5 million.

Since the Asian financial downturn in 1997 however, the company’s struggled to remain profitable. An association with Peugeot Citroen in 1999 building diesel engines and developing the Peugeot 4007 and Citroen sport utility vehicles based on Mitsubishi’s Outlander has helped keep it afloat along with the 380 model. Other brands include the Lancer and Magna.
