Austin

Herbert Austin, left the English Wolseley Motor Car Company to found the Austin Company in 1905.The First Austin Car, a 5 litre chain drive vehicle was built around 1911. During World War 1 the Austin Company expanded enormously with government contracts for munitions, armoured cars etc. After the war it fell into receivership but recovered to build smaller cars, the Austin Twelve and the Austin 7. The Austin Seven, a simple tiny vehicle was later built under licence by BMW as the Dixi, the Japanese Datsun, The Bantam in the USA and the Rosengart in France.

During World War 11 the Austin Company continued making automobiles as well as military trucks and aircraft. In 1952 they merged with Morris to from the British Motor Company, BMC. BMC’s greatest achievement in small car design was the front-drive Mini. Later to be followed by the 1100 and 1800 brands. In 1968  as part of British Leyland Austin variations remained popular until the badge was discontinued in 1987 and Austin Rover became the Rover Group.
