Herbert Austin, left the English Wolseley Motor Car Company to found the Austin Company in 1905.The First Austin Car, a 5 litre chain drive vehicle was built around 1911. During World War 1 the Austin Company expanded enormously with government contracts for munitions, armoured cars etc. After the war it fell into receivership but recovered to build smaller cars, the Austin Twelve and the Austin 7. During World War 11 the Austin Company continued making automobiles as well as military trucks and aircraft. In 1952 they merged with Morris to from the British Motor Company, BMC.
